Prefect is Perfect?

One of the protagonists in The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams is Ford Prefect. He is an alien that has been stuck on the Earth for 15 years. He was sent to Earth to gather information for the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy but he never made it back to their spaceship and so he was left behind on Earth. He first enters the story when his good friend Arthur Dent (the second protagonist, an earthling) has a hangover and his house is being bulldozered. By this time Prefect already knew that the aliens were coming to destroy the Earth in just a couple of minutes and he was there to take Dent with him to the spaceship.

When I was reading the book I noticed that Ford knew a lot about the galaxy. He knew how different species of aliens would react to their presence. The first time they hitched a ride they got on a spaceship that belonged to species called Vogons. Ford already knew that the Vogons would hate them but he still had to get on the spaceship as the Earth was about to explode. Also whenever his friend Arthur asked something he always knew the answer right away. This can be explained by the fact that after all he is one of the authors of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. He must have examined the guide many times and so he was able to know so much. And also the fact that his brother is the president of the galaxy does no harm.

I think that when Adams was writing this story he had already decided that he would make Ford an omniscient man (or an alien) and his name is a good clue too. The name Prefect resembles a lot the word perfect. And a man can’t be perfect if he doesn’t know everything.

Even though that I’m writing this analysis about Ford it wasn’t that fun to follow his actions just because nothing came as a surprise to him and so there wasn’t that much drama involving him.
